This authentic and rare LIFE Magazine from February 5, 1965 covers the funeral of England's most famous prime minister, Sir Winston Churchill.

As Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill is most famous for standing up against Nazi Germany and Hitler, and doing so practically alone in the world. His principled stance helped saved the Western world at a very perilous time. While the United States provided essential sustenance, equipment, and moral support for years, it was Winston Churchill and the UK that fought alone even as England suffered from constant German attacks on their population, cities, and land.

Only after the Japan attack on Pearl Harbor and Germany's declaration of war upon the USA did the United States join in the battle, which ultimately brought about an end to the wars in the European and Pacific theaters.

Churchill was also known to be an master orator, supremely skilled politician and leader, and author of a myriad of books for which he ultimately won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for "for his mastery of historical and biographical description."

It is not an exaggeration to say that without Winston Churchill's steadfastness, the world would be a vastly different and inferior place.
