This Event Happened 109 Years Ago - And You Remember It

Posted

Why do some events that took place decades ago remain in our societal conscious and other more recent events do not? Perhaps because such events "back in the day" were more infrequent than today, or perhaps the news media was simply not so developed. Either way, there are some events that stick around, despite the passage of time.

One such event is the sinking of the Titanic. This event, which took place 109 years ago on April 15, 1912 remains a seminal historic tragedy. Perhaps this is because so many people lost their life -- and because many people survived to tell the tale. It could also be because the tragedy was not a result of war or terrorism -- sadly in those circumstances destruction is the expected outcome. The Titanic was unique in that it was a totally unnecessary and shocking disaster.

At AnyDate, we have a new newspaper history book with coverage of the Titanic from the pages of English (ie, UK) newspapers which give a unique perspective on this event. We also have our NY Tribune reprint from that tragic day. Either way, if you are curious about the events leading up to the Titanic's sinking you can learn more here.
