What is it about a President that captures the hearts and minds of the people?
If I had to guess, I would say it’s their power. There is something about power that creates an elusive energy around a person, no matter who they truly are, their character, values, or even what they represent. Because in our world today, power is everything. Powerful people may be loved or hated, but they are noticed! They say that bad attention is better than no attention and this rings true for those in power.
Following a celebrity’s every move is common today, and thanks to the paparazzi, there is no shortage of information. A president is a celebrity of sorts in that we idolize them, expect them to make our lives better, and we follow their every move. With time we get to know them, or we think we do- and they become part of our world- albeit our imaginary one. And in the same way that a celebrity’s success or misfortune evokes an emotional reaction in us, a president’s life has that same influence.
We expect a lot from our presidents. We want them to lead and inspire us, make big changes and entertain us. We want them to be strong, take calculated risks and act with bravery. This is a tall order but we feel entitled to it. Some presidents have succeeded, some less so- but no matter what, we are captivated by our presidents, even years after they have passed.
In April, we commemorate special days of past presidents. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the US, died on April 12, 1945 and Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the US was assassinated on April 14, 1865.
At AnyDate.com we offer the historic reprint of FDR’s death, historic coverage of Abraham Lincoln, as well as a whole slew of presidential offerings. We encourage you to make a purchase for yourself or a fellow history buff as we continue our quest to better understand the magic of a president.
