Our Old Map of South America is a fine example of a territory that was very much in transition during the time of its printing. Taken from the Mitchell Atlas and printed between the 1840s and the 1860s, this 16 x 20 Old Map of South America shows the former names of the colonies (in English) along with the "original" borders.
South America was very much in transition and a state of unrest at the time that the South America map was printed. Unrest and conflicts between those who had already colonized these areas, the native peoples, and the new colonists, usually from other countries was constant and unrelenting. Revolution and change was already in the air for South America.
While the borders would continue to change, the face of South America as we see it today is drastically different than our Old Map of South America, as it captures the 19th century feeling of change that swept through the continent at this time. This Old Map of South America is the perfect gift for any historian or teacher of South American history.
